Japanese Imari charger of large and impressive size being 15 13/4 inch in diameter. The decoration is hand painted in underglaze blue and overglaze enamels, highlighted by gold leaf detailing. The central motif is a phoenix rising into the air, painted on a stylized scroll that is being rolled out across the charger. This bold platter is unusual in having green as well as the normal blue and rusty orange pallet that one expects from imari, 19th century.
